QUOLKE’S CORNER 6/21/11

QUOLKE’S CORNER #96
NEXT STEPS & HB 153

On Saturday it was announced that opponents of SB had already collected 714,137 signatures to put this issue on the ballot in November. The Cleveland Teachers Union members collected over 24,000 of those signatures. Many thanks go to Michele Pomerantz, Danny Kelly, Hazel Hicks, Pat Zawadzki, Annette Chase, Bonnie Hedges, all of the members who came to Indians games rain or shine, and all of the members that were trained and collected signatures from neighbors and friends.

Unfortunately, SB 5 is a battle that we are fighting on many fronts. The House of Representatives added SB 5 language and merit pay to the Governor’s budget bill (HB 153). Members of the State Senate voted to remove those provisions and the budget is now with a conference committee. I am asking that every member contact their State Senator and House Representative TODAY.   The message is this: Urge the members of the Conference Committee to support the Senate version of the state budget bill (HB 153), which leaves SB 5 provisions and merit pay for teachers out of the final budget.

These very issues are going to go to a vote of Ohioans in November and do not belong in the state budget. We need to let all of our Ohio legislators know how important it is to each of us that SB 5 provisions stay out of the budget.  This could be voted out of Conference Committee by the end of this week, so please take time to contact your legislators today.
